I was pretty sure S/mileage was going to hit the 10,000 mark for their Major Debut Smile Campaign.
I was not expecting them to obliterate it.
You see, I thought I knew how this “Collect X number of item to win” crap works in the idol world. Remember how Morning Musume was formed, by selling 50,000 copies of “Ai no Tane”? So they basically hit the 50,000 mark on Day 4 and stopped counting because the goal had been met. Similarly, Fartface Ohori’s quest to sell 10,000 copies of “Amai Kokansetsu” went down to the wire on the last day, ending in a tearful episode of AKBingo! where she barely cleared the mark.
So, you think, the S/mileage campaign is going to go like that, where they are on the verge of FAILing their major debut because they couldn’t muster enough smiles from stupid ass wotas, and it’ll take a superhuman effort on the last day to get No. 10,000. Certainly the running totals made it feel that way—3,800 by the halfway point, somewhere in the 6,000s at the three-quarter mark—it looked like S/mileage was all but doomed, except that so much time and effort had already been poured into the group that Tsunku was probably planning to debut them anyway, and if they didn’t get enough smiles they’d just fudge the numbers and miraculously get the last one on the last day. Right? Right?
Well, Hello! Pro doesn’t pull that kind of AKB shit around here.
If the S/mileage members’ blogs are to be believed, S/mileage did not just clear the 10,000-smile mark for their campaign. They smashed it. With 16,000.
That’s a lot of stupid ass wotas. And it’s amazing to think that even those of those of us who are moonspeak-impaired, but can figure out their way around a website, also became a part of that.
Can we do it, S/mileage? Can we do it?
YES WE DID!
